AZUSA, Calif. – The last time Azusa Pacific started the season 5-0 none of the current players were born.
With their 70-56 victory against Seattle Pacific the Cougars will start the season a perfect five-for-five for the first time since the 1992-93 campaign.
"Our goals aren't as based so much on wins and loses but more our effort and execution. If we do those things we are happy," said head coach T.J. Hardeman. "We started off strong tonight but we didn't execute well in the later stages of the game and give Seattle Pacific credit for fighting back. They are quality program and we knew that we happen."
Cydie Jones led all scorers with an 18-point night on a 7-for-13 shooting night. The senior made a team best three shots from behind the arc. Maggie Dumphy and Allison Greene each chipped-in 12 points. Kelly Hardeman's 10-point performance rounded out the double figure scorers for the Cougars.
"It is incredibly important. When you have only one or two players who can score the other teams can focus on them and it makes playing defense easier but we have a lot of weapons and we talk a lot about setting each other up and helping each other. We are doing that."
Azusa Pacific's quick paced style yielded quality results once again as they outscored the Falcons 10-0 on the fast break. The Cougars also were plus-eight in the points off turnover category.
In the opening quarter the Cougars shot nearly 60 percent while holding Seattle Pacific under 30 percent as they took a 17-7 lead. The combo of Jones and Hardeman combined to score 13 points during the frame. The Azusa Pacific onslaught continued in the second quarter as they hit over 60 percent of their attempt and increased their lead to 36-14 before eventually taking a 36-18 edge at intermission.
The Falcons mounted a rally in the second half. Seattle Pacific dwindled their deficit down to 49-38 as the Cougars shots weren't falling at the rapid rate they were in the first half. But just as quickly as the Falcons got close, Azusa Pacific proceeded to go on a 9-2 scoring spurt punctuated by a Joelle Tampien three-pointer. Seattle Pacific never gave chase after that as the Cougars won for the first time in seven all-time meetings.
"We had number of players step-up to the challenge when they had their scoring run and that's great to see. Seattle Pacific is a quality program and I'm glad to see those players step-up when things got a bit closer."
Azusa Pacific will look to make it six straight wins to start the season on Tuesday when they host Westmont.
