Perfect Weekend

POMONA, Calif. – At the PacWest/CCAA challenge the Cougars rose-up to the test as they finished off the event with a 69-58 victory against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Less than 24 hours prior, Azusa Pacific put a 26-point victory on host Cal Poly Pomona. Both CCAA foes qualified for the NCAA tournament last season. The Cougars move to 2-0 for the second straight season. They will look to make it a perfect 3-for-3 on Tuesday in their home opener against Cal State L.A.

Kelly Hardeman was dominate as the senior led the way against an undersized Toros squad. The senior scored a game high 25 points in 36 minutes. The senior also grabbed 14 rebounds. Cydnie Jones did a solid job of directing the offense. The point guard dished out four assists to go along with her 11 points and six rebounds.

"We took advantage of some match-up issues with Kelly. We felt like if we got her in position to score she would get the job done," head coach T.J. Hardeman said. "Certainly I'm pleased with our start; you can't complain with two wins in two days to start the season. We still have a lot to improve on and we will get back at it soon enough."

After two games the Cougars have taken a liking to the three-point shot. After shooting 30 in Friday's win against Cal Poly Pomona, Azusa Pacific fired up 22 on Saturday. Hardeman shot a team high 10 and connected on two.

Azusa Pacific took a 17-15 lead into the second quarter and proceeded to dominate the next 10 minutes. The Cougars busted open the game by outscoring the Toro by 12 points as they took a 14-point edge into the locker room.

The Cougars would have no part of a Cal State Dominguez Hills comeback as they kept their lead at double figures through a majority of the second half.

In addition to the individual efforts of Hardeman and Jones, Maggie Dumphy played a great game down low with nine rebounds and eight points in just over 20 minutes.
