Chaminade Claims Four Setter

AZUSA, Calif. – Chaminade overcame an early deficit to post a 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-22) win against Azusa Pacific on Friday evening.

The duo of Kim Spring and Keani Passi were lethal for the Silverswords as they combined for 29 of the squads 52 kills with 15 and 14 respectively. Spring hit .480 for the match.

Also aiding in Chaminade's winning cause was their blocking efforts as they doubled up (14-7) the Cougars blocking total. Reigna Johnson had a block solo and nine block assists.

Individually for the Cougars Crystal Dedes had a team best 10 kills while Ally Gonzalez chipped in a nine-kill evening.

Things started well for the home team. Just before the halfway opening point in the frame the Cougars tried to get some separation as they took a 12-9 lead. However, Chaminade (12-3, 5-2 PacWest) kept it close with a brief scoring burst and it was nip-and-tuck once again. Knotted at 18-18, the Cougars went on a 4-1 spurt capped off by a Crystal Dedes and Joy Reinke block assist; forcing a Chaminade timeout. The Silverswords couldn't pull closer than two points and the frame was complete when a Chaminade attack error game Azusa Pacific a one set lead.

Chaminade took control of the second frame from onset. The Cougars were forced to use both their timeouts early as they were down 12-5. During those first 17 points, the Silverswords were hitting .500 while Azusa Pacific had more errors than kills on their attack attempts. Azusa Pacific got their deficit down to five points but no closer as the visitors squared the match at one set each.

The third set reverted back to the ways of the first stanza as the teams traded points until Chaminade got some separation at 15-12 and the Cougars (7-8, 3-4) used their first timeout of the set. After the stoppage the Silverswords pressed further ahead and after a block assist they were up 18-13 and Azusa Pacific used their final timeout. The Cougars tried to use the home court edge but their rally efforts fell short as Chaminade went ahead in the match.

Chaminade looked to be in position to win the match in the fourth set as they nudged ahead 11-8. However, the Cougars rebounded after a timeout and took a 14-13 lead to force the Silverswords into a timeout of their own. The tipping point came when the teams were tied at 19-19 and Chaminade went on a 5-2 scoring spurt to get their first match point. A Dedes kill extended the match with a kill but the Silverswords won the match on the next point via a Cougar service error.

The Cougars close out this three match homestand against the Hawaii conference schools tomorrow against BYU-Hawaii at 12:30 p.m.
