Non-Conference Downer

LOS ANGELES – Looking to build on their momentum after a three-set win against the conference leader on Saturday, the Cougars stepped out of conference for a final time on Wednesday against Cal State L.A.

Unfortunately Azusa Pacific came up short in a close three-set contest with the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. won 25-23, 25-20, 25-23

The Golden Eagles, who earlier this season were ranked in the top 25, improves to 14-5 while Azusa Pacific falls to 8-9.

Leading the way for the Cougars was the duo of Ashley Midland and Ally Gonzalez with nine kills each. Mattie Shelford chipped in an eight kill effort on 18 attempts. Danika Young and Jaden Louie directed the offense with 12 and 19 assists respectively. Ashley Swatek had a team best 13 digs.

JamieAnn Bero had a team best 10 kills to pace the Golden Eagles. Their pinpoint attack was critical in the tight match as they outhit the Cougars .303-.198.

In the first set the Cougars couldn't quite keep up with the Golden Eagles as the home team went ahead 17-11. However, Azusa Pacific rallied back and was able to tie the frame at 23-23. Unfortunately the rally didn't pay off as Cal State L.A. clinched an early lead in the match on a kill and a Cougar attack error.

Azusa Pacific raced out to a 5-2 edge to start the first set but the Golden Eagles brushed aside the early deficit and took a 6-5 lead to set-up a tightly played second stanza. Cal State L.A. put some separation between them and the Cougars after a Lauren Gomez kill gave her team a 20-17 lead. The Cougars got within two points (22-20) after an Ally Gonzalez kill put couldn't pull any closer.

The nip-and-tuck contest continued in the third set. Azusa Pacific took their largest lead of the match after an Ashley Midland service ace gave her team a 12-7 lead. However, the home team responded and looked to be in control with a 20-17 edge. None the less a feisty Cougar team rallied and took a 23-22 lead once Crystal Dede recorded her sixth kill of the night. Yet, Cal State L.A. closed the match by scoring the final three points to secure the victory.

Azusa Pacific hosts Dominican on Friday evening for a 7 p.m. match as they step back into league play.
