Box Score AZUSA, Calif. – Records were set and milestones accomplished in Azusa Pacific's 91-54 victory over Holy Names in the Cougars PacWest home opener.
Just before halftime Kelly Hardeman became the 23rd player in Azusa Pacific women's basketball history to score 1,000 career points. During her career landmark achievement, she scored a career high 30 points. The all-PacWest selection has now scored 1,012 points in a Cougars uniform.
"I feel very fortunate to accomplish this milestone," Hardeman said. "While it might be an individual honor, I'm grateful for all the teammates who contributed to this achievement."
Lauren Gilster also posted a career high scoring effort for the Cougars with a 20-point afternoon. The junior went 6-for-10 from the floor and nailed all eight of her free throw attempts.
The margin of victory and points scored were both school records for Azusa Pacific in a PacWest contest. Saturday's win was just the fourth home game this season and the Cougars first game inside the friendly confines of the Felix Event Center since Nov. 18. Furthermore, it was Azusa Pacific's first game in 13 days.
"What I was really pleased with today was how everyone contributed. When we put in our reserves we were able to increase the lead and keep our intensity," said head coach T.J. Hardeman.
Azusa Pacific (8-5, 4-2) raced out to a commanding lead thanks to Hardeman's stealth shooting. The junior scored 12 of the team's first 16 points by nailing her first four three-pointers as the Cougars held a 16-3 lead. The home team continued to stretch that lead as they took a 29-8 advantage with 10:22 left in the half after a Lisha Elsenbach lay-in.
The scoring didn't stop there as Azusa Pacific continued to increase their lead as they took a 48-18 advantage into the locker room. During the opening frame, the Cougars shot 50 percent (17-of-34) from the floor while their defensive forced 13 Holy Names (2-11, 1-4) turnovers which they converted into 15 points.
In the second frame the Cougars continued their solid output as they never let the Hawks within 30 points of the lead.
Azusa Pacific takes the next week off before hosting Dominican next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
