Hard Fought Effort Falls Short Against #3 WWU

Box Score AZUSA, Calif. – For the second time in three games the Azusa Pacific women's soccer squad outshout its opponent but, once again, came out on the short end of the stick.

The third ranked Western Washington Vikings made an early second half goal stand-up as they posted a 1-0 win on Monday evening. 

Catherine Miles scored the game's only goal when she took a pass from Anna DeWeirdt and shot the ball pass Cougar goalie Sarah Klinkenberg in the 57th minute.

In the 14th minute the Cougars nearly scored their first goal of 2014 when a Mayra Almazan free kick from 35 yards was blocked away in front of the goal by a Vikings defender. Alamazan nearly scored again from distance when her left footed blast from 25 yards out forced a diving save from Ashley Haden.

The Cougars had one more solid chance in the in the 86th minute. Alyx Williams made a great run down the left side of the field into the box but in the last moment before her shot, the ball was deflected away by a Vikings defender.

Azusa Pacific posted 16-8 edge in overall shots and a 7-5 advantage for shots on frame. The home team also notched an edge in corner kicks (5-2).

Monday's game concluded a three-game opening stretch where they played three straight games against teams that went to the NCAA Division II Championships last season.

The Cougars play their first road game of the season on Thursday when they travel to UC San Diego.
