Box Score AZUSA, Calif. – If Saturday's conference opener is any indication, the rest of the PacWest is officially on notice. Azusa Pacific took control from the opening kick and dictated the play throughout in a 4-1 victory over Point Loma.
"It's really huge to start conference play with a win," said head coach David Blomquist. "Getting on the scoreboard early was a huge boost for the rest of the game. I'm proud of the way we played so we can enjoy it for a little bit then get back to work next week."
The Cougars got on the board first with a goal in the ninth minute. Raul Martinez scored his first goal of the season with a perfectly placed right-footed blast from the top of the box. Keenan Armbrust provided the assist on a beautiful give-and-go play.
Azusa Pacific put its second goal on the board in the 26th minute when Carlos Garcia Partida found the back of the net for the second time this season. The junior nicely tucked his shot from the top of the box inside the right post.
Coming out of halftime the Cougars (4-1, 1-0) continued to apply pressure and it took less than 10 minutes to boost their lead to three goals. Keenan Armbrust collected a touch pass from Jeremy Bishop in the 51st minute and hit a screaming shot into the back of the net. The game was all but sealed with Armburst's second goal of the game. The junior put a tough angled shot from the right side inside the box that deflected off a Point Loma defender and into the side of the net.
After missing the first game of the season, Armbrust has scored or assisted on six goals this season.
Point Loma's (0-5-1) lone goal came in the 80th minute when Nico Tagaloa corralled a loose ball after a scramble at the top of the box. His shot from 18 yards just tipped off the outstretched finger tips of Cougar goalkeeper Tyler Jaramillo.
Azusa Pacific outshot the Sea Lions 10-8 with a 6-3 edge in shots on frame. The home team recorded a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Cougars' four goals are the most they have scored since the second to last game of the 2013 season when they recorded a 6-0 win against Arizona Christian.
Jaramillo earned the win in goal by making two saves.
