Cougars Snatch Victory in Overtime

Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. – After over 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, Azusa Pacific came through win a golden goal in claiming a 1-0 win over UC San Diego on Saturday evening. 

Both teams came into the game sporting a regional ranking with the Cougars entering the game ranked sixth with UC San Diego ranked eighth.

"It was a tough battle all night," said head coach David Blomquist. "The guys really responded well after a tough loss on Thursday. We kept pushing all night against a really good opponent and I'm excited to get an in region road victory." 

Keenan Armbrust scored the game winning goal in the 102nd minute when his right footed blast from the top of the box went into the net.

In the opening 45 minutes the teams combined for just five total shots (3-2 Azusa Pacific) but neither team got on the scoreboard. During the waning moments of the opening stanza, the Tritons Sam Palano put a shot on frame but Tyler Jaramillo kept the score 0-0 heading into halftime.

Less than two minutes into the second half Dane Johnson put a shot on frame in hopes of giving the Cougars the edge but his shot was saved by Cameron EcElfresh. Azusa Pacific earned back-to-back corner kicks in a 30-second span a few moments later but couldn't convert the opportunity. 

UC San Diego had an opportunity in the 67th minute but a header by Charlie Keating just after a corner kick went wide right. 

In the first overtime the Tritons put two shots on goal while the Cougars placed on frame. Armbrust's shot in the second overtime was the only one for both teams.

Azusa had two good chances in the closing minutes of the second stanza. Keyran Kelly had a shot from in close go just high over the cross then Luke Ackermann had a header in the 82nd minute saved.

Azusa Pacific outshot the home team 17-12 overall while holding a 7-6 edge for shots on goal. Both teams took five corner kicks. 

GAME NOTES

Jaramarillo earned his second collegiate shutout in his fourth career start in goal … The all-time series between the two teams is now tied 13-13-1 … It was the first meeting between the teams since the 2003 season … The Cougars have won six of their last seven 1-0 games
