Box Score ARCATA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific's momentous season-opening win left the No. 14-ranked Cougars vulnerable to an upset, and longtime rival Humboldt State obliged with a 30-10 victory Saturday night at the Redwood Bowl.
While the Lumberjacks keyed on All-American running back Terrell Watson, limiting him to 51 yards on 18 carries, their offense produced a pair of 100-yard rushers in Nick Ricciardulli and Ja'Quan Gardner as HSU jumped out to a 23-0 lead and led 30-3 at halftime.
Gardner's 54-yard TD run opened up the scoring just over a minute into the contest, and he added a six-yard TD with 11:18 left in the first quarter. Humboldt State tacked on a field goal for its third score in as many possessions to start the game, and an Azusa Pacific fumble led to Ricciardulli's five-yard scoring run to make it 23-0 with 10:39 left in the second quarter.
The Cougars got on the scoreboard with Jamie Cacciatore's 26-yard field goal with 5:13 to play in the second quarter, and Chad Jeffries threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Henry late in the third quarter for the Cougars' lone touchdown.
Ricciardulli led all rushers with 146 yards on 23 carries, while Gardner averaged 8.5 yards per carry on his 16 touches, finishing with 136 rushing yards. The Lumberjacks piled up 288 rushing yards and outgained Azusa Pacific 406-260 in total offense. The Cougars were led in rushing by Jeffries, who carried 14 times for 66 net yards, while Henry led APU receivers with six catches for 83 yards.
Five of HSU's first seven possessions started in Azusa Pacific territory, and the Lumberjacks closed out the first half with a 15-play, 75-yard drive capped by Cass White's 17-yard TD reception in the back of the end zone with just 12 seconds left in the first half. Each of the Lumberjacks' first four scoring drives took less than 90 seconds.
A 31-yard Jeffries scramble to midfield set up the Jeffries-to-Henry TD pass, completing a five-play, 86-yard scoring drive that took just 2:05 off the clock and pulled the Cougars within 30-10 late in the period. However, Humboldt State gave up just 34 yards over APU's final three possessions of the game and maintained possession for nearly 10 of the final 13 minutes of the game.
With the loss, Azusa Pacific falls to 1-1 and will host Simon Fraser University Sept. 20 in Glendora's Citrus Stadium. The game is the second of three scheduled non-conference games against Great Northwest Athletic Conference foes before conference play officially begins in October.
