Box Score HONOLULU, Hawaii – In their first of four games away from the mainland, Azusa Pacific fell to Hawaii Pacific 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
"The game was back and forth the entire time. They played well in the first half and gave us some problem. In the second half we were more dangerous but for everything we tried they had the answer defensively," head coach Dave Blomquist said.
Hawaii Pacific (5-3-1, 3-0 PacWest) statistically played a better first half but the teams went into the locker room tied at halftime. The Sharks put five shots on frame but couldn't get find the back of the. Tyler Jaramillo made four blocks with the Cougars defense making a team save by the game's midway point.
Azusa Pacific started the second 45 minutes of play well as they drew two corner kicks and booted two shots but couldn't put a goal on the scoreboard.
The Sharks broke the scoreless tie in the 51st minute when Brais Garcia put the ball behind the goal line. His header came off a free kick from the foot of Erik Kemsies.
The remainder of the half saw the Cougars (4-2, 1-1) earn four more corner kicks and take four shots but they couldn't get the equalizing goal. Luke Ackermann put a shot on frame in the 85th minute but his attempt was pushed aside.
"Our best shot in the second half came when Luke dribbled to his right but the keeper came out and that took away his angle which caused him to miss it wide," Blomquist said.
The Cougars held a 9-8 edge in overall shots and a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. They also attempted more corner kicks (7-5) then the home team.
Eduardo Palacious earned the win in goal by making three saves. Jaramillo pushed aside four shots in front of the net.
Azusa Pacific continues their Island trip with a Monday afternoon contest against Hawaii Hilo. The game starts at 4:30 p.m. (HST).
