Tough Night in San Diego

Box Score SAN DIEGO – Alyssa Dwyer helped pace Point Loma to a three-set sweep of Azusa Pacific on Saturday evening.

The senior put together a 14-kill, no attack error evening in the Sea Lions 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-18) victory. Dwyer notched a .609 hitting percentage. Bethany Mandon tied Dwyer for match high honors in kills as well.

A back-and-forth opening set went the Sea Lions way late in the frame. With Azusa Pacific holding a 19-17 lead, the home squad rallied by winning eight of the set's final nine points. During that scoring run Point Loma got three kills from Dwyer and two from Delaney McCraney to go ahead 1-0 in the match.

The Cougars dug out of an early hole in the second set as they found themselves down just 8-7. However, the Sea Lions reeled off five straight points as they nudged in front 13-7. Azusa Pacific fought back to within 19-15 and eventually got their deficit down to 23-20 but it was too late in the set as Point Loma went up 2-0 in the match.

Point Loma jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the third set. Azusa Pacific continued to fight and was able to pull within 17-14 which forced a Sea Lions timeout. The stoppage in play was critical for the home squad as they finished the match on an 8-4 scoring spurt to seal the match.

Ashley Midland had a solid effort from her middle hitter spot with a seven-kill performance and a .389 hitting percentage. Jaden Louie put together her fourth double-double of the season with a 16-assist, 13-dig contest.

After moving to a season best four matches above .500 at 11-7 on Oct. 16, the Cougars have struggled of late by dropping their last four contests.

Azusa Pacific will look to right the ship on Wednesday evening when they travel to Fresno Pacific for their final road match of 2014.
