Lancers Halt Azusa Pacific's Winning Ways

Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. – All good things must come to an end.

California Baptist put an end to two Azusa Pacific streaks with a 1-0 victory in a highly defensive contest.

The loss ends the Cougars six-game unbeaten streak as well as snaps the five-game winning streak Azusa Pacific had going.

It is the third straight game the teams have played a 1-0 game with the Lancers winning two of those match-ups.

"Neither team had a whole lot of opportunities today. I felt like we were running in quick sand most of the game. We didn't have the same explosiveness that we typically show. We didn't play our best but I felt like we gave a good effort and battled but just couldn't give our best effort," said head coach Jason Surrell.

California Baptist (9-4-2, 7-0-2 PacWest) scored on their first shot on goal of the afternoon. Lindsey Vesling found the back of the net for the seventh time in 2014 off a cross from Jasmine Stokes in the 42nd minute. It was the only shot on goal for both teams in the opening 45 minutes of action.

The goal ended Zoey Bauman's goalless streak at 623:04. Furthermore, it was the first ever collegiate goal the freshman has given-up. Azusa Pacific had not allowed a goal in the mainland of the United States since Sept. 27.

Azusa Pacific (7-7-1, 5-3-1) had a free ball opportunity in the 75th minute but Lindsay Ryal's boot into the box from 35 yards out was grabbed by Lancer goalkeeper Sara Escobedo before any Cougar got a chance to threaten.

Kimberly Allard nearly made it a two-goal cushion for the home team in the 81st minute but her angled shot from the left side went just wide of the cage. It was similar situation two minutes later when Allard's cross to Rachel Witz was headed to the right of the frame.

A continued effort to get the ball in their offensive zone didn't produce any shots from the Cougars. The Lancers limited Azusa Pacific to just one shot in the second half and just four for the game.

California Baptist finished the game with eight total shots; two of which were on goal.

The Cougars return home Thursday to start a three-game homestand to end the 2014 slate as they welcome the Academy of Art for an 8 p.m. kick-off.
