Winning Ways Continue for Cougars

Box Score AZUSA, Calif. – The streaks are still going.

With the Cougars posting a 5-0 win over Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday afternoon, there are two streaks of note still rolling along.

The Cougars haven't allowed a goal for five straight games. Furthermore, the shutout streak goes back six games with the overall time of the streak at 491:46. It is also the fourth straight win for Azusa Pacific which is a season high. In addition, the Cougars have an unbeaten streak of five straight games going.

"I think we have settle in. Early in the year we were trying some players at new positions and I think we have found a group that is working well together," said head coach Jason Surrell. "We have been able to get good balance on both sides of the ball since we have tighten up the back lines."

Azusa Pacific wasted little time getting on the scoreboard on Saturday. Alyx Williams scored from a blast 20 yards away from the net when she broke away from the defense and put a shot into the bottom half of the goal in the fifth minute.

Katelyn Rogers made the score 2-0 just over two minutes later when she put home a feed from the left side off of Mayra Almazan's cross from 15 yards out. The Cougars third goal of the half came when Lindsey Ryals hit a perfectly placed ball from 25 yards out into the upper left corner.

With just under two minutes left in the first frame, Shannon Hardy hit a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal from 10 yards out. Haley Fisher assisted on the final goal of the half.

While the Argonauts didn't find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes they created opportunities. They took five corner kicks and put together four shots, one of which went off the cross bar, but the strong defense of the Cougars kept them off the scoreboard.

Amanda Hardy looked to have given the Cougars a five-goal cushion but an offside call early in the second half negated the goal. Ultimately Azusa Pacific did get that five-goal lead in the 54th minute when Almazan scored her team leading fifth goal off a free kick from 20 yards out.

The Argonauts best chance to find the back of the net came with three minutes left when Stephanie Esquivel's shot hit the cross bar and was then cleared away to secure the shutout.

Zoey Bauman made two saves as she ran her personal shutout streak to as long as the teams current run.

The Cougars look to improve on their 6-6-1 overall record and 4-2-1 mark in PacWest play on Thursday when they host Dixie State at 8:00 p.m.
