Box Score ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- Despite posting a staggering 24-3 advantage in shots, the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific suffered a stunning 1-0 upset to No. 6-ranked William Carey (Miss.) University Friday afternoon at the University of Mobile (Ala.) Soccer Classic.
The Cougars put 17 of their 24 shots on goal, but William Carey's Natalie Nino scored the game's lone goal in the 30th minute. Goalkeeper Jackie DeNova, who has split time in goal through the season's first 7 games, stopped all 17 shots on goal to pick up the shutout victory, just the second of the year for the Lady Crusaders.
Five different Cougars fired at least 3 shots, led by senior forward Theresa Broad's 5-shot afternoon. Broad and junior Kelsey Walker each put 4 shots on goal, and senior defender Katie Rorabaugh put 3 of her 4 shots on frame. Sophomore Brittany Flanagan and freshman Heidi Witschi took 3 shots each. Azusa Pacific also took a season-high 11 corner kicks to William Carey's 1.
Both of the Cougars' losses this season are to teams ranked in the NAIA's top 6, and in those contests Azusa Pacific has posted a whopping 40-12 edge in total shots. Both game-winning goals occurred between the 30th and 33rd minutes, with 24 Cougar shots on goal turned away by the opposing defense.
With the loss, Azusa Pacific drops to 4-2 overall, while William Carey's third victory over a top 10 team extends the Lady Crusaders' season-opening win streak to 8 games. The Cougars wrap up tournament action at the University of Mobile (Ala.) Soccer Classic Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. (CDT) against tournament host Mobile at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
