Box Score AZUSA, Calif. -- Senior defender Katie Rorabaugh scored 2 penalty-kick goals and assisted the game's opening score to lead the NAIA's No. 4-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 3-1 win over No. 3 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) Saturday afternoon at the Cougar Classic.
The Cougar defense held Lindsey Wilson without a shot for the first 58 minutes of the clash between NAIA women's soccer powers, and the Blue Raiders' only score came with just over 15 minutes remaining in the contest after Azusa Pacific had already built a 3-0 lead.
Rorabaugh's free kick just over 12 minutes into the game skipped over the crowd in front of the goal and settled at the feet of freshman midfielder Molly Lavin at the back post. Lavin wasted no time putting the ball into the back of the net to give Azusa Pacific its first score of the season after suffering a 1-0 shutout in Thursday's season opener against top-ranked Lee (Tenn.).
Lindsey Wilson committed 18 fouls in the game, compared to 12 for Azusa Pacific, and both of the Cougars' penalty kicks were awarded as a result of takedowns in the box. Late in the first half, senior forward Mandi Morrow injected some energy into the Cougar attack with her appearance off the bench, spending less than 3 minutes on the field before she was pulled down in the box by a Lindsey Wilson defender. That foul, 1 of 10 in the first half on the Blue Raiders, resulted in Rorabaugh's 42nd-minute penalty kick goal that pushed Azusa Pacific's lead to 2-0 just before halftime.
Freshman forward Natalie Sun was an early second-half sub, and she too was taken down in the box just 8 minutes after she came into the game in the second half. The ensuing penalty kick was again converted by Rorabaugh for a 3-0 Cougar lead in the 67th minute.
Lindsey Wilson's most active attacker on the day was defender Yolanda Hamilton, and her efforts netted her the Blue Raiders' lone score. Hamilton collected a pass from Ida Gregersen deep in the box, where she lifted a shot over sliding freshman goalkeeper Alexa Douglas to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Lavin and junior midfielder Jennie Cress each registered 2 shots, putting both on goal. The final shots tally was 12-2 in favor of Azusa Pacific, with the Cougars putting 6 shots on goal while also generating a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
With the win, Azusa Pacific evens its 2009 record at 1-1, while Lindsey Wilson drops to a rare 0-2. The Cougars return to action with a pair of games at next weekend's California Baptist Invitational, where they will face Menlo on Friday, Sept. 4 and Trinity International on Saturday, Sept. 5, both 1 p.m. contests at California Baptist's Riverside campus.
