Sliding Through San Marcos

POWAY, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific gave up the lead 3 times in an 8-7 non-conference road defeat to Cal State San Marcos Tuesday evening at Poway High School, extending the Cougars' losing streak to 3 games. The skid ties a season-high, and Azusa Pacific drops to 2-5 on the current road trip, a season-long 8-game stretch that wraps up with tomorrow's return to Golden State Athletic Conference action at California Baptist.

Cal State San Marcos, now 8-8 against GSAC competition this season, came back from 2-run deficits in back-to-back innings to pull off the upset of the NAIA's No. 14-ranked Cougars. Azusa Pacific never led for more than an inning, despite taking 2-run leads in the sixth and seventh innings.

Junior first baseman Brice Cutspec hit his 21st home run of the season, his first in the month of April, to snap his longest homerless drought of the season at 7 games. His fifth-inning solo shot tied the game at 3-3, and junior third baseman Ryan Delgado followed Cutspec's home run with another extra-base hit, a 1-out double to right-center. Delgado's 2-bagger turned into a go-ahead run for a 4-3 lead on senior centerfielder Drew Evans' single to center.

An inning later, senior shortstop Shaun Lane dropped a bunt single down the third-base line, the only hit in an inning in which he came all the way around to score to give Azusa Pacific a 5-3 advantage. Cal State San Marcos tied the game at 5-5 on James Scott's 2-out, 2-run single through the right side with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth.

Azusa Pacific picked up 2 more runs without a hit in the top of the seventh, as the Cougars took advantage of 2 Cal State San Marcos errors but also stole 3 bases in the frame. The first 3 Cal State San Marcos batters in the bottom of the seventh reached base safely, with the first 2 scoring on Austin Coleman's double down the left-field line to tie the game at 7-7. Coleman later scored on a groundout for the game-winning run. Travis McCracken gave up base-hits to Azusa Pacific in the eighth and ninth innings, but he didn't allow a runner past second base to hang on for the victory.

Senior rightfielder Eddie Crespo led off the game with an infield hit, coming around to score on Cutspec's RBI grounder to shortstop that gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the first inning. After Azusa Pacific starting pitcher Matt Stone surrendered a 1-out single and walked the next 2 batters to load the bases, senior righthander Christian Gagné retired the next 2 batters to limit the damage to just a single run on a sacrifice fly that tied the game at 1-1. Gagné lasted 5 more innings, saving the Azusa Pacific bullpen with 5.2 innings of relief work and leaving the game with a 7-5 lead.

Crespo, Cutspec and Evans each collected 2 hits, accounting for 6 of Azusa Pacific's 8 hits in the contest. Cal State San Marcos was led by a 3-for-4 effort from Scott, who also drove in 3 runs.

Azusa Pacific drops to 6-8 on the road, and the Cougars drop to 28-12 overall, while Cal State San Marcos improves to 22-12 on the season. The teams will meet again in Azusa in non-conference action on Monday, April 27.
