Cougars Take Care of Business

AZUSA, Calif. -- The NAIA's No. 8-ranked Azusa Pacific never let a San Diego Christian lead, quickly erasing all 4 deficits it faced in Saturday's doubleheader in its ensuing at-bat, and the Cougars picked up a 5-4, 11-5 doubleheader sweep over the Hawks to extend its program-record home winning streak to 20 games.

Three straight 1-run innings in the fifth, sixth, and seventh gave San Diego Christian a 4-3 lead, but a 2-out error gave senior centerfielder Drew Evans an RBI opportunity, and his double to left scored Carlos Maddox from first base to tie the game at 4-4. In the ninth inning, junior catcher Chris Feicht was hit by pitch with 1 out, and Evans brought Feicht's courtesy runner Maddox around to third with a 1-out single. Junior leftfielder Stephen Gillette brought home the game-winner with an RBI grounder to second.

Junior righthander Garrett Lebsock fired 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win in relief, his fourth victory of the season in as many appearances out of the Cougar bullpen.

Fellow right-handed relief man Ben Jones earned the win in the nightcap after tossing 5 innings of 3-hit relief. Jones struck out 5 and walked 3 in his longest appearance of the season.

San Diego Christian took the first-inning lead on Ruben Hinojosa's 2-run home run, but Evans' 2-out double down the left-field line scored senior shortstop Shaun Lane. Junior first baseman Brice Cutspec scored from third on a passed ball to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the second, some shaky Cougar bunt defense helped load the bases when the first of 2 sacrifice bunt attempts following a leadoff single was mishandled in the infield. The second was fielded by Cougar starter Christian Gagne, but his toss to third to cut down the lead runner was beaten out by Anthony Velasco. Ryan Inverso brought home a run with a sacrifice fly, and Hinojosa hit a 2-run, 2-out single to center to give the Hawks a 5-2 lead.

Senior second baseman Ryan Dowell singled home a run with 2 outs, and Cutspec smashed a 3-run home run 2 batters later to give the Cougars the lead for good at 6-5. Another Dowell RBI single sparked a 5-run fourth inning that featured Gillette's 2-out grand slam, his seventh home run of the season and his fourth in the past 5 games.

Fresno Pacific's doubleheader split with Concordia Saturday allowed Azusa Pacific to pull within a game of GSAC leader Point Loma Nazarene with the sweep, and the Cougars are now 13-1 overall and 5-1 in GSAC play. San Diego Christian drops to 4-8 overall while remaining winless in GSAC play at 0-6.

The Cougars host NCAA Division III's No. 2-ranked Chapman in non-conference action at 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 23, before returning to conference play against Fresno Pacific on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m., wrapping up a 6-game homestand.
