Cougars Sweep A Re-Duel

IRVINE, Calif. -- Junior lefthander Peter Gehle took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning, lifting Azusa Pacific to its first shutout of the season, part of the NAIA's No. 8-ranked Cougars' 1-0, 6-4 doubleheader sweep at Concordia Saturday afternoon.

Gehle retired 15 of the first 17 batters he faced, walking 2 batters before surrendering an infield single to Concordia's speedy centerfielder Pete Lemone to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. Lemone moved to second on a groundout but was stranded there. After a leadoff lineout in the eighth, Lemone was hit by pitch and advanced to third on Michael Gonzalez's 2-out single to center that ended Gehle's afternoon. Senior reliever Garrett Lebsock kept the contest scoreless with an inning-ending groundout to shortstop.

Concordia's Dan Orlick, meanwhile, was working on a gem of his own, and he took a 2-hitter into the ninth inning against the Cougars and their GSAC-leading scoring offense. However, junior catcher Chris Feicht and junior third baseman Ryan Delgado led off the ninth with back-to-back singles, and an error loaded the bases with no outs. Concordia third baseman Jeff Senters fielded senior centerfielder Drew Evans' bases-loaded grounder and stepped on third for the first out, but he completed the double play across the diamond at first base instead of throwing home to cut down the lead runner, allowing pinch-runner Todd Stiles to score on the play for a 1-0 Azusa Pacific lead.

Lebsock set the Eagles down in order in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the win and pick up his third victory in as many relief appearances this season. The shutout was Azusa Pacific's first since last year's 15-0 win at Westmont, and it was the first 1-run shutout victory since the Cougars defeated Point Loma Nazarene at home by that score in April of 2003.

The Cougars wasted little time getting on the board in the second game, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning on the strength of 3 extra-base hits. Junior first baseman Brice Cutspec led off the frame with an opposite-field double to the left-center field gap, and sophomore rightfielder Virgil Chavira cleared the bases with a 3-run triple down the left field line. Senior shortstop Shaun Lane's 1-out double to left-center scored Chavira to complete the 4-run burst.

Concordia answered with single runs in the third and fifth innings off Cougar starter Christian Gagné, but senior leftfielder Stephen Gillette's sixth-inning solo shot to right pushed the margin back to 3 runs at 5-2. The Cougars worked the bases for an insurance run in the seventh off Concordia flamethrower Cameron Bayne. Lane was hit by pitch to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a groundout to second base. He scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 6-3 before Bayne struck Delgado out to end the frame.

Gonzalez, who ended Gehle's outing in the opener with a 2-out eighth-inning single, also knocked Gagné from the nightcap, smashing a 1-out solo home run to right field in the bottom of the seventh that trimmed Azusa Pacific's lead to 6-4. Senior righthander Ben Jones walked the first batter he faced before picking up the save with a strikeout and groundout.

Gillette and Chavira each collected 2 hits, accounting for 4 of the Cougars' 6 hits in the contest, and Delgado was a 2-hit performer in the opener.

With the sweep, Azusa Pacific improves to 9-1 overall, 2-1 in GSAC play, while Concordia drops to 4-4 overall, 2-3 GSAC. The Cougars have another full slate of games scheduled in the upcoming week, hosting non-conference contests on Tuesday against Cal State San Marcos and Wednesday against Whittier before taking on The Master's at 5 p.m. Thursday evening in Azusa.
