Explosive Cougars Plate 20

AZUSA, Calif. -- Junior first baseman Brice Cutspec slammed a pair of home runs, including a 3-run first-inning opposite-field shot that opened the scoring as the NAIA's No. 8-ranked Azusa Pacific cruised to a 20-3 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Tuesday evening.

Cutspec drove in 6 runs with his 2 home runs, the second a towering fly ball to right that cleared the fence with ease. Junior catcher Anthony Delgado and junior shortstop Todd Stiles each added grand slam home runs, with Delgado clearing the bases in a 5-run fourth inning before Stiles came off the bench to do the same in another 5-run outburst in the sixth inning.

The Cougars tallied just 14 hits in all, but 7 were for extra bases. In addition, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps issued 11 walks and committed 5 errors to provide Azusa Pacific with plenty of run-scoring opportunities. Four of the errors came in the first 4 innings, when Azusa Pacific built a 9-0 lead, and 4 walks were issued in the 6-run fifth inning that featured Cutspec's towering 3-run blast.

Six Cougar pitchers combined to hold an opponent to 3 runs or less for the sixth time in 7 games this season, and junior righthander Ian Kelly's 3-inning, 5-strikeout effort earned him his second season and career win.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps catcher Moose Halpern homered in his first at-bat after coming off the bench, sneaking one just inside the left-field foul pole for a 2-run shot in the seventh inning that pulled the Stags to within 15-3.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 7-0 on the season, while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps drops to 0-2. The Cougars, whose GSAC-opening doubleheader at Point Loma Nazarene last Saturday was postponed until April, will open conference play Wednesday with a 2 p.m. visit to The Master's College.
