Box Score SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Azusa Pacific remained perfect through 2 matches of pool play, needing just 60 minutes to record a 3-set sweep over Doane (Neb.) College Wednesday night at the 30th Annual NAIA Volleyball National Championship. Sophomore middle blocker Amy Alkazin led the way with a nearly-flawless 11 kills in 15 attempts for a blistering .733 attack percentage in the 25-23, 25-11, 25-18 victory, which sets up a winner-take-all battle between the fifth-seeded Cougars and eighth-seeded College of Idaho for the Pool E championship and a potential playoff-round bye as the single-elimination bracket begins on Friday.
Senior outside hitter and GSAC Player of the Year Jill Baker led all hitters with a match-high 15 kills, converting her 31 attempts at a .387 clip, and sophomore right side hitter Whittany Radcliffe added another 8 kills with a .500 hitting percentage.
Baker, Alkazin and Radcliffe tallied 5 kills each in the third set, part of an Azusa Pacific offensive fireworks display that saw the Cougars score 21 of their 25 points from kills to close out the match with a symbolic exclamation point.
Other standout efforts included sophomore middle blocker Ariel Beetstra's match-high 7 blocks and sophomore libero Robin Portela's match-high 22 digs, her ninth straight match with 15-plus digs and her sixth 20-dig effort of the year.
The Cougars' largest lead in the opening set was 13-9, following back-to-back Baker kills. Doane responded with 5 of the next 6 points to tie it at 14-all for the first of 5 more deadlocks in the set, and the Tigers took a late 22-21 lead on an Azusa Pacific attack error. Head coach Chris Keife called for a timeout to slow the momentum, and the Cougars came out of the timeout with back-to-back kills from Alkazin and Baker. Baker finished off the set with a trademark putdown of an outside set from sophomore Raechel Jones.
The second set began with a 13-5 Azusa Pacific run, and the Cougars blew the set wide open with a 7-0 run that included 4 blocks to push the lead to 20-8. Portela recorded 10 digs and Beetstra had 6 blocks in the second set alone, anchoring a defense that forced Doane into 11 hitting errors with just 7 kills in the period. In the third set, Azusa Pacific trailed by 2 points several times before taking advantage of a 12-3 run, highlighted by 4 more Baker kills, to secure the lead for good at 19-12. The Cougars then sided out the rest of the way to seal the win.
Azusa Pacific is now 26-8 on the season, matching the program's highest single-season win total since 1991 and matching the fourth-highest win total in program history. Doane drops to 29-9 on the season, and the Tigers will close out their campaign Thursday against Lewis-Clark State (Idaho), as both teams are 0-2 in pool play and will not advance to the single-elimination bracket.
