Cougars Slip Into Quarterfinals

Box Score

DECATUR, Ala. -- Senior forward Theresa Broad scored the game-winning goal midway through the second half to lead No. 4-seeded Azusa Pacific to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over 13th-seeded Indiana Wesleyan on a rain-soaked field Monday morning at the 26th Annual NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship in Decatur, Ala.

The Cougars advance to the national quarterfinals for the fifth straight season, where they will take on the winner of Tuesday's 10 a.m. matchup between fifth-seeded William Carey (Miss.) and 12th-seeded Graceland (Iowa) to kick off Wednesday's quarterfinal action at 10 a.m. (Central time)

Weekend rains and a steady mist through most of the game at Decatur's Jack Allen Recreation Complex left areas of standing water on the field, slowing the pace of the game to a crawl.

"We knew there was a possibility of rain, so we were somewhat mentally prepared for it," Cougar head coach Jason Surrell said. "Conditions were not great on the field, though, and it affected how we passed the ball. In the second half, we realized we needed to go a little more direct than we wanted."

Indiana Wesleyan's Megan Marshall gave the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when she cleaned up a loose ball in the box off an Indiana Wesleyan free kick.

"We thought one of our defenders would clear (the free kick), but it fell right to their player who made a great finish," Surrell said. "You don't like to fall behind, but we've been tested so much this year, it didn't seem to faze anybody."

The Wildcats threatened to double the margin with a flurry of corner kicks and shots over the next 8 minutes, including a tough low shot from Kylie Dial to the left post that required a diving right-handed deflection by freshman goalkeeper Michelle Wieland. In the 30th minute, the Cougars marched the ball up the field, where Broad led freshman Jacqueline Conforto into the box. Conforto beat a defender for a clear shot at the goal from the left side, burying the 10-yard strike into the far-post side netting to tie the game at 1-1.

"They were better than some of the scouting reports we had on them, and that may have been the most difficult round of 16 game we've ever had," Surrell said. "We've only had 1 game in the last 3 weeks, and the jump from (Opening Round opponent) Maine-Fort Kent to Indiana Wesleyan was a few notches up. Getting that first-half goal to tie it up was a big boost for us."

Wieland made another pair of saves in the first 20 minutes of the second half, finishing with 4 saves in the contest, and junior Kelsey Walker assisted Broad's game-winning header with just over 20 minutes remaining in regulation.

Broad now has a team-high 16 goals, including a team-high 5 game-winners. She has now scored in 2 straight games, both NAIA national-tournament contests, following the first 3-game stretch of her career without a goal or an assist. Conforto, meanwhile, becomes one of the Cougars' 9 multiple-goal scorers this season with her second score of the year, both of them either tying or winning games.
