Hall Heats Up

CARSON, Calif. -- Sophomore point guard Briana Hall scored 8 straight points to cap a 12-0 run late in the first half, sparking the NAIA's No. 10-ranked Azusa Pacific to a double-digit halftime lead and a relatively easy 72-53 non-conference road win over NCAA Div. II Cal State Dominguez Hills Tuesday night.

Hall scored 13 of her season-high 18 points in the opening half, burying a trio of first-half 3-point tries, and the NAIA's No. 10-ranked Azusa Pacific overcame a 23-22 deficit with 10:56 to play in the first half by holding the Toros scoreless over the next 8:30. Cal State Dominguez Hills missed 11 straight shots and turned the ball over 4 times as the Cougars built up a 34-23 lead on consecutive Hall 3-pointers.

Cal State Dominguez Hills' only field goal in the final 10 minutes of the period, a MacKenzie Mathias 3-pointer, momentarily cut the margin to 34-26. However, junior guard Michelle Byrd's bucket in the final minute sent Azusa Pacific into halftime with a 10-point lead, 36-26, and the Cougars led the entire second half by double digits.

Sophomore guard C.J. Hill added 15 points, and sophomore center Amber Williams posted her second straight double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Although Azusa Pacific was outrebounded for the first time this season, 38-35, the Cougars committed a season-low 11 turnovers and generated a 24-7 margin in points off turnovers.

Azusa Pacific twice pushed the lead to 17 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half, the first time on Hill's 3-pointer with 16:40 remaining that capped an 8-1 run, and then again with 11:11 to play when junior guard Teri Higgenbottom buried a trey for a 55-38 lead. After the Toros cut the lead down to 13 points at 57-44 with 7:46 to play, the Cougars responded with a 15-4 run to put the game out of reach. Hall scored the first 5 points of the run, and 5 others accounted for the other 10 points as Azusa Pacific extended the lead to its largest of the game (24 points) at 72-48 with 1:29 remaining.

Mathias led Cal State Dominguez Hills with 14 points, although she also cost her team a game-high 6 turnovers. Aundria Anderson added 10 points and a team-high 6 rebounds for the Toros, who turned the ball over 20 times and shot just 32 percent (18-for-56) from the field in the game.

With the victory, the Cougars improve to 4-2 overall heading into a pair of games this weekend at the Holy Names University Thanksgiving Classic. Both of Azusa Pacific's opponents there, Holy Names and Menlo College, received votes in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll, and the contests represent the final tune-ups before the Golden State Athletic Conference season kicks off. The Cougars host The Master's College in the GSAC opener for both teams on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 5:30 p.m.
