Box Score AZUSA, Calif. -- Westmont revived what used to be the premier NAIA women's soccer rivalry, stunning the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific with a literal last-second shot to stun the Cougars, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon.
Jessica Zuehlsdorf finished the back end of Jenna Nelson's long free kick from near the right sideline in the closing seconds, putting the ball across the goal line just 1 second before the game would have gone into the books as a tie. The "golden goal" lifted Westmont to its first victory over Azusa Pacific since 2006, snapping the Cougars' 5-game series winning streak. Over the previous 5 matchups, Azusa Pacific had won by a combined 16-2 margin, and the Cougars snapped Westmont's string of 11 consecutive NAIA Tournament appearances in 2007 with a 5-1 victory in the NAIA Region II playoffs.
Azusa Pacific dominated the 90 minutes of regulation, piling up a 20-7 shots advantage heading into overtime, but Westmont limited the Cougars to just a single shot in overtime. The Warriors also controlled play in the closing minutes of the second overtime, keeping the ball near the Azusa Pacific penalty box for most of the final minute. As the closing seconds ticked away, the Cougars were whistled for a foul with less than 10 seconds left. Nelson hurriedly put the free kick back into play in front of the net, and Zuehlsdorf emerged from the crowd in front of goal to put away the game-winner, her first goal of the season.
Westmont jumped onto the scoreboard first when Jameisha Washington tapped in Zuehlsdorf's cross from the right touch line in the 55th minute. The shot was just the fourth of the game for the Warriors. Barely 10 minutes later, senior forward Theresa Broad evened things up with a 16-yard strike into the upper left corner of the net, collecting a pass on the ground from senior midfielder Lauren Lane before burying the open look at the net in the 66th minute.
Broad and Lane were the only Cougars who played in Azusa Pacific's last loss to Westmont, another last-minute setback in 2006. The Cougars have had the most recent success in the past 5 years of the series (6-1-1), although Westmont still leads the all-time series, 26-16-4, including a 20-4-3 stretch from 1993-2003.
Azusa Pacific's only scoring chance in overtime came in the 105th minute. Junior midfielder Kelsey Walker took possession of a Westmont corner kick, clearing it ahead to Broad, who had a step on the last line of Warrior defenders and took the ball all the way to the top of the Westmont penalty box for a shot that missed high. The senior trio of Broad, Lane and Rorabaugh combined for 14 of the Cougars' 21 shots in the game.
With its first Golden State Athletic Conference defeat in 2009, Azusa Pacific drops to 11-3 overall, 7-1 GSAC, while Westmont snaps a season-long 3-game losing streak and improves to 5-6-1 overall, 3-4 GSAC. Azusa Pacific still controls its destiny in its hunt for a fifth consecutive conference title, a feat matched in the GSAC only by Westmont from 1993-97.
The Cougars have 2 conference games remaining, hosting San Diego Christian on Saturday (Oct. 24) before the regular-season finale at Fresno Pacific the following Tuesday (Oct. 27).
