Box Score EL CAJON, Calif. – Sophomore
Whittany Radcliffe registered 10 of her 11 kills in the final 2 sets to kick-start a sluggish-starting Azusa Pacific to a Golden State Athletic Conference sweep of San Diego Christian College, 26-24, 25-17, 25-11, Tuesday evening in the Ryan Athletic Center.
A southpaw transfer from UC Santa Barbara, Radcliffe was nearly perfect over the final 2 sets, putting down 10 of 14 attack attempts without an error. Her emergence offered some balance to the Jill Baker-led Cougar offense and in the process put the heads of Hawk defenders on a swivel as they tried to cover both Baker and Radcliffe. As a result, the NAIA's No. 5-ranked Cougars cruised in the last 2 sets to post their 20th consecutive victory over San Diego Christian.
Baker finished with match-high 14 kills against just 1 error and picked up a team-leading 8 digs along the way. Sophomore Marguerite Hanna chipped in with 8 kills, while All-GSAC hitter Amy Alkazin put in an efficient night of play with 6 kills in 7 attempts.
Azusa Pacific nearly stumbled from the opening gate, blowing a 23-15 first-set lead. The Hawks fashioned a late 9-1 run to catch the Cougars at 24-all before Baker restored order with her fifth kill of the set. SDCC failed on the following attack to give Azusa Pacific the first-set verdict at 26-24.
From then on the Cougars rolled. Radcliffe ignited an 8-3 run with a kill to start the second set. Azusa Pacific pushed the advantage to 16-8 and maintained the 8-point cushion throughout the rest of the set.
In the third and final set, Radcliffe collected 3 early kills in a 10-3 Cougar run to start that set. Later Azusa Pacific carved out a 6-1 run, all with kills including 3 by Radcliffe, to assume a comfortable 20-8 advantage. Cougar coach Chris Kiefe cleared the bench before the Azusa Pacfiic finished off the match with a 25-11 score.
The sweep is Azusa Pacific's 11th straight over the Hawks, who have dropped 34 consecutive sets to Azusa Pacific.
With the victory, Azusa Pacific improves to 18-7 overall, 9-4 in the GSAC. San Diego Christian falls to 10-15 overall, 1-12 in the GSAC.
