LA MIRADA, Calif. -- Even with a fortunate early goal, Biola simply couldn't keep up with Golden State Athletic Conference-leading Azusa Pacific Saturday afternoon, succumbing to the NAIA's No. 4-ranked Cougars, 3-1. With the victory, Azusa Pacific remains atop the GSAC standings as the conference's only unbeaten, improving to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in GSAC play.

Azusa Pacific continues conference play on Tuesday, Oct. 13, visiting No. 18-ranked The Master's College in a 4 p.m. contest that precedes next Saturday's clash (Oct. 17) with the NAIA's top-ranked California Baptist.

"It can be tricky to get used to the turf, but at least we get to play on the turf in back-to-back games," Cougar head coach Jason Surrell said. "Playing on the road against a good team like The Master's on a Tuesday is a difficult game, especially when you're trying not to look ahead to California Baptist coming up next Saturday."

Senior forward Theresa Broad swung the entire match around in a 93-second stretch midway through the opening half. In the 28th minute, Broad blasted a brilliant 28-yard left-footed strike into the net with an assist from senior Lauren Lane to tie the game at 1-1. Then she put Azusa Pacific in front for good when she put away freshman forward Natalie Sun's cross from the goal line with a beautiful first-time volley for the 2-1 lead in the 30th minute.

Sun knocked in the insurance goal in the 86th minute off another Lane assist, finishing from close range in a scramble in front of the Biola net. The Cougars yielded only a single shot in the final 86 minutes, and Biola's first shot that found the back of the net came off an opportune Eagle bounce. A pass from Cougar defender Katie Rorabaugh back to goalkeeper Alexa Douglas took an odd bounce, and the ball could not be cleared before Ashley Moseley controlled it into the net for a 1-0 Biola lead just 3:33 into the contest.

"At the start, I was wondering which team was going to show up today," Surrell said. "We were much more efficient and had a much better work rate than Wednesday. This was quite an improvement from earlier in the week."

Azusa Pacific out-shot Biola, 15-2, with the Eagles' only other opportunity being a header missed wide in the 70th minute. The Cougars also had an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
