Hats Off for the Rookie

AZUSA, Calif. --- Fresh off her conference and regional player of the week honors, freshman Theresa Broad continued to find the back of the net, this time registering her first collegiate hat trick to lead the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 4-0 victory over The Master's Tuesday afternoon.

"It was exciting to get that third goal, because there have been other games where I had 2 goals and couldn't get the third one in," said Broad, who tallied 2 goals in Golden State Athletic Conference wins over Biola and Hope International. "It's not like it matters for me anyway, though, because our goal right now is to prepare for the playoffs."

In extending its home unbeaten streak to 19 games, the Cougars controlled the game from start to finish, out-scoring the Mustangs 31-1. Junior Randie Massro put 2 headers onto the crossbar, and Broad nearly completed her hat trick in the 70th minute when she put a header onto the crossbar.

"Theresa has been pretty special for us up top," said Cougar head coach Jason Surrell. "She is relentless, and she has the stamina to just go and go. Our shots advantage is a tribute to the whole team. We play a team-style defense, and we all have something to do defensively, and we do a good job with it."

The Cougars got into their attack right away, as Broad put a pair of shots on goal in the first 7 minutes. Just prior to the 10-minute mark, sophomore Karen Lawrence sent a free kick from just outside the left side of the penalty area in front of the goal mouth, where junior Randie Massro headed it off the crossbar. The ball dropped to the feet of Broad, who tapped it in to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

After 2 more shots on goal were saved by The Master's goalkeeper Lindsay Marr, Broad converted again in the 24th minute, one-timing a ball played through into the penalty box from sophomore Sarah Yoro, who had dribbled from deep in the Azusa Pacific midfield up the left sideline before setting up Broad with a perfect pass towards the goal.

Broad scored her third goal after senior Jolie Nitta carried ball through the midfield before delivering a diagonal ball to sophomore Sara Odenthal along the right side of the box. Odenthal delivered a cross to Broad, who directed it to the far post for her third goal in the 88th minute to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead.

"I felt relief more than anything after working so hard all game for that goal," said Broad. "Sara played a great cross to me. I don't know how it went in, but I flicked it and it somehow went far post. I don't think I could have made that shot again if I tried."

Azusa Pacific's third goal came in the 85th minute, when Nitta drilled a free kick just from the edge of the box into the bottom of the crossbar, bouncing down and into the goal for a 3-0 Cougar lead.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 6-1 in GSAC play, 12-1 overall, while The Master's drops to 3-4 in GSAC, 9-6 overall.
