Run Away Cougars

Azusa Pacific 75
California Baptist 62

AZUSA, Calif.-- Azusa Pacific used a pair of big runs at the end of each half to sneak past California Baptist, 75-62, Tuesday night in Azusa.

The win moves the Cougars to 20-7 overall, 12-4 GSAC. It is their second straight 20-win campaign and sixth in the past 7 seasons. The Lancers fall to 13-14, 5-10.

Earlier in the day, Azusa Pacific climbed up to No. 10 in the NAIA Coaches' Poll despite its shocking loss Saturday at Concordia. It is its highest ranking in program history.

The Cougars forced the Lancers into 36 turnovers, taking full advantage by outscoring the Lancers, 35-11, on giveaways.

"As has been the case for most of this season, our defense created our offense again tonight," said Azusa Pacific head coach Danelle Liles, who becomes the first Cougar coach to post consecutive 20-win campaigns in her first 2 seasons. "We came together as a team very well tonight."

Kelsey Hudson and Lindsey West combined for 37 points.

Azusa Pacific used big runs at the end of each half, including a 14-4 spurt at the end of the first half that gave the Cougars an 11-point halftime lead. But it was 15-2 game-ending run that put the game away.

Leslie Newkirk hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark the Lancers' 16-4 run early in the second half to turn a 46-36 deficit into a 52-50 lead with 11:34 to play. At one point in the run, the Lancers scored 7 straight, 5 of which came from Vanessa Wilt.

Then things turned sloppy when during a 7 minute stretch, the teams combined for 14 turnovers and 7 missed shots.

West broke a Cougar scoring drought that lasted for more than 3 minutes and tied the game with a lay-up less than a minute after the Lancers took their lead. Her bucket then started a 10-3 mini-run, during which Kelsey Hudson scored 4 straight on a lay-up and a 15-foot jumper, which gave them a 60-55 lead with 3:49 to play.

However, the Lancers answered right back with 5 straight points on a trey by Newkirk and a jumper by Nastasia Arriaran to tie the game at 60-60 with 3:01 to play.

West and Hudson rose to the occasion again, though, to give the Cougars the lead again with back-to-back lay-ups and a 64-60 lead with 2:20 to play. After nabbing a steal on the ensuing inbound pass, Leathers missed a pair of free throws, but West grabbed a clutch offensive board and Hudson finished a 3-point play to push the margin up to 7 (67-60) with 2 minutes left. The Cougars closed out the game hitting all 8 of their free throw attempts, 6 of them by Monica Somers.

Wilt, a 6-1 freshman center, finished with a game-high 21 points, but was plagued by foul trouble before fouling out with 4:26 to play. After scoring 14 points in the first 20 minutes, she scored just 7 in the second half.

"She (Wilt) killed us in the first half, but our defensive position on her was not very good," said Liles. "We made an adjustment at halftime, and it worked well."

Keyed by Wilt, Cal Baptist, which held the Cougars scoreless for the first 3 minutes of the game, scored 9 of the game's first 11 points, but the Cougars responded as Ashley Oakes buried a trey to start a 12-2 Cougar run that gave them a 14-11 lead just 8:34 into the game.

Somers finished with 16 points in just 14 minutes. She scored 10 of them in the first half, all in the final 3 minutes, as the Cougars ended the half with a 14-4 run to take a 39-28 lead into the locker room.
