Azusa Pacific 69

AZUSA, Calif.-- All-GSAC Amy Van Doesburg finished with 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds and hit 4 free throws to bookend a 12-3 game-clinching run to lift the NAIA’s No. 7-ranked The Master’s to a 76-69 win over No. 12 Azusa Pacific in a Golden State Athletic Conference match-up of Top 15 teams.

The loss is the Cougars’ second in a row, the first time this season they have dropped back-to-back games. Azusa Pacific is now 10-4 overall, 2-1 GSAC.

The Master’s improves to 7-2, 1-1.

The Cougars, who played catch-up for most of the night, took a 60-59 lead on a Kelsey Hudson lay-up with 7:12 to play. Nearly a minute later, Van Doesburg, who was 0-for-3 from the line to that point, sank a pair to give the Mustangs the lead for good with 6:18 to play.

Those free throws were the first of 6 straight Mustang points that gave them a 65-60 lead with 4:52 to play. Jaclyn Rice, who led Azusa Pacific with 20 points, sank a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 65-62, but back-to-back lay-ups by Courtney Jackson and Tiffany Webb increased the margin, and another pair of free throws by Van Doesburg gave the Mustangs a 71-63 lead and put the game out of reach with 2:20 to play.

The Master’s stormed out of the gate and seemed headed for a fairly easy win. It opened the game with 11 straight points before the Cougars climbed within 3 (13-10) at the 14:34 mark. The Mustangs, though, were able to get back a pair of 10-point leads midway through the opening half, but again the Cougars fought back to get within 3 (34-31) at halftime.

The Mustangs led 45-36 just 2:42 into the second half, but the Cougars scored 9 straight, keyed by a Rice trey and capped by a lay-up by Alyssa Ferdaszewski, to tie the game for the first time at 45-45 with 14:25 to play. Just 2 minutes later, Rice hit a lay-up and a trey to give the Cougars their first lead of the night (54-50) with 11:55 to play. The teams then traded leads 5 times over the next 3:32 before Van Doesburg gave the Mustangs the lead for good.

Tiffany Webb scored a game-high 24 points, hitting a trio of 3-pointers. She also nabbed 6 steals.

Rice hit 3 treys and grabbed 4 steals. Lindsey West finished with 14 points and 3 blocks, and Monica Somers chipped in with 10 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds. All 9 Cougars scored.
