The One that Got Away

Point Loma 66
Azusa Pacific 60

AZUSA, Calif.-- When Azusa Pacific head coach Danelle Liles looks back at this one, she may consider this the one that got away, especially when you consider the opportunity.

And if anyone believes in second chances, it's Point Loma Nazarene's Andrea Honer.

With the Sea Lions clinging to a 2-point lead with 13.4 seconds left, Honer missed 2 free throws but got her own rebound and was fouled again this time taking advantage of her second chance. Honer made 2 free throws with 11 seconds left to ice the game and lift the NAIA's No. 9-ranked Point Loma to a 66-60 GSAC win over No. 14 Azusa Pacific in a battle of NAIA Top 15 teams Saturday night in Azusa.

The loss snaps the Cougars' 3-game winning streak and drops them 13-5 overall, 5-2 GSAC. Meanwhile the Sea Lions put an end to their 2-game slide and improve to 14-2, 4-2.

"We did all the things tonight that we talked about not doing before the game, especially in the first half," said Liles. "It's definitely frustrating. We could have won this game had we played half way decent."

It's not as if either team played like they wanted this one. The teams combined for 57 turnovers and 71 missed shots committing more turnovers and missed shots than points scored. The Cougars had 30 turnovers and shot just 36.4%

Alli Greenaway and Sarah Leathers both hit treys to open the game, but Greenaway answered with another and the Sea Lions never relinquished the lead. They built the lead to as many as 10 (22-12) with an 8-2 run capped by back-to-back buckets by Mica DeHoog. Lindsey West scored the first 6 of 8 straight Cougars points to get back within 2 (24-22) with 4:55 to play, but they could not get over the hump—the story of the night.

West did all she could finishing with a game-high 19 points.

Five other times, including 4 times in the second half, the Cougars whittled a deficit down to 2, but each time the Sea Lions had an answer, and more often than not, it came by way of a Cougar miscue.

The Cougars trailed 56-53 on another Leathers trey when the Sea Lions scored 5 straight points to take their largest lead of the second half on a fast break lay-up by Jessica Mercado (61-53) with 1:16 remaining. West hit a pair of free throws, and after a Sea Lion turnover, Kelsey Hudson converted a lay-up with 39 second left. Again, the Cougars forced another turnover when the Sea Lions failed to inbound the ball, and Hudson converted a pair of free throws to get the Cougars within 2 (61-59) with 18 seconds left.

The Cougars fouled Honer, and she obliged by missing a pair of free throws, but she gave her team new life with the offensive rebound and then the game by converting on her second chance.

On the ensuing possession, Monica Somers hit the second free throw to get the Cougars within 3 (63-60). The Cougars then forced another turnover, but Jaclyn Rice's eighth 3-point attempt of the night clanked off the rim and the Sea Lions closed it out with 3 free throws.

"We're not shooting very well right now," said Liles. "We're working on some things and getting better at them, but we're just not there yet and against a good team like that you have to capitalize on their mistakes and we didn't."

Hudson finished with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Leather hit 3 treys and finished with 9 points. All 5 Sea Lion starters finished with double-figures. DeHoog led the Way with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Mercado had 11 to go along with 10 steals.
