It's a Career Night

AZUSA, Calif. -- Seniors Marie Dyk, Nicolette Dresback and Candis Regan were playing their final regular-season game in front of their home crowd. They may remember this one for awhile.

Both Dyk and Dresback finished with career-highs, Dyk broke a school record, and Regan had a fine all-around performance as Azusa Pacific throttled Westmont, 87-76, in both teams' final regular-season game.

The win is the Cougars' eighth in their past 10 games and moves them to 20-10 overall, 13-7 GSAC. Westmont drops to 18-10, 13-7. More importantly, the win moves the Cougars into a third place tie with the Warriors, but by virtue of its pair of wins against the Warriors, the Cougars will be the third seed in the GSAC Postseason Tournament.

Azusa Pacific hosts The Master's Thursday (March 4) at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the GSAC Tournament.

Dyk finished with a career-high 31, scoring 17 in the first half. She shot 11-of-16 from the floor and set a school-record with 8 three-pointers, hitting 5 in the first 20 minutes. Dyk broke the previous standard of 7 shared by a pair of former Cougars—Christy Brock in 1996 and Allison Box in 2000.

"I just really wanted to come out with a win," said Dyk. "It just so happened that I happened to have a good game. As soon as shot my first one, I felt it. After the bank shot (which came on her sixth three of the night), I knew it was my night."

Westmont's Meghan O'Donogue buried a trey to tie the game at 22, Dresback answered with the first of 4 Cougar bombs in an 18-3 run over a 4:17 span that opened up a 40-25 Cougar lead. Dyk hit back-to-back treys, and Dresback capped the run with a lay-up to give the Cougars their largest lead of the half.

At that point, though, the Cougars, who were 16-for-28, missed their next 6 shots as the Warriors closed the half with a 9-0 run to get within 6 (40-34) at the intermission.

The Cougars led 50-44 with 14:17 to play when Dyk hit back-to-back treys to start a 14-2 run the opened up the game's largest lead, 64-46, with 9:15 to play. The Cougars held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

"This was definitely an emotional day all the way around," said Azusa Pacific head coach Danelle Liles. "We are an aggressive team, always looking to shoot. Marie has the green light, and when she gets her feet set, she can stroke it."

As if the night wasn't already big enough, earlier in the day Azusa Pacific found its way back into the NAIA's Top 25, cracking the rankings at No. 24, which virtually locks up one of 16 available at-large berths into the NAIA Tournament in 2 weeks.

"For us this year has been all about earning respect," said Liles. "We were picked to finish seventh, and we finish third. That says a lot about the make-up of these girls. We worked so hard all year at earning respect, and now I think we have some."

Dresback also had a career-high 27 points, hitting 9-of-15 shots from the floor and 7-of-10 from the line. Regan finished with 6 points and a team-high 5 assists in 28 minutes.
