Dyk, Defense Floods Lancers

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- She only has a handful of games left in her career, but senior Marie Dyk is ending it with a bang.

Dyk scored a game-high 27 points, including 22 in the second half, to lift Azusa Pacific to an 89-79 GSAC road win over California Baptist.

The win is the Cougars' ninth in their past 12 games as they improve to 19-9 overall, 12-6 in the GSAC. Cal Baptist drops to 13-14, 8-11.

Dyk finished 7-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. She also hit 8-of-9 free throws, 7 of them in the final minute as the Cougars staved off a furious Lancer charge.

Leading 43-28 in the opening minutes of the second half, Dyk scored 15 points in a an 18-2 Cougar run over a 4:49 span that seemingly blew the doors off the game to give the Cougars a 61-30 lead with 13:40 to play. Dyk hit 4 of her 5 treys in the run, and finished the spurt by scoring 9 consecutive points.

Five Cougars finished in double figures. Kelsey Hudson finished with 14 points and 5 rebounds. Lindsey West added 12 points, 8 rebounds.

The Cougars led 77-50 with 6:54 to play when the Lancers tightened the ranks and scored 16 straight points to climb within 11 (77-66) with 3:56 to play. A West lay-up temporarily stemmed the tide, but the Lancers answered with an 11-4 run to get within 6 (83-77) with 42 seconds left but could get no closer as the Cougars buried 6 clutch free throws to keep the Lancers at bay.

The Cougars opened the game with a 14-4 run to take early control of the game. They led 26-22 with 5:10 to play in the half before ending the half with a 13-4 run, capped by a Dyk trey to assume a 39-24 halftime lead.

For the second straight game, the Cougars turned up the defensive pressure and forced the Lancers into 30 turnovers. They collected 14 steals, led by West's game-high 5.

Monica Somers chipped in with 11 points off the bench, 9 of them coming from the charity stripe. She scored 7 of her 11 in the second half. Nicolette Dresback finished with 10 points and 6 assists.
