FRESNO, Calif. -- Jaclyn Rice poured in a career-high 21 points to lift the NAIA’s No. 19-ranked Azusa Pacific to an easy 101-52 non-conference win over William Jessup on the second day of the 2004 Fresno Pacific Holiday Classic.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 2-0 on the young season. William Jessup falls to 0-2.
It is the first time the Cougars eclipsed the 100-point barrier since the 2000-2001 season in a 102-62 win over Pomona-Pitzer.
Rice eclipsed her previous career-best of 18 points as she was perfect from the field. She was 8-for-8 from the field, connecting on all 5 of her 3-point attempts, fall one trey short of matching her career-high of 6 set last year.
The Cougars scored the first 16 points of the game and never looked back. Rice scored 8 of them, including 2 treys. The Cougars then opened up a 45-10 lead behind 15 combined points from Ashley Oakes, Lindsey Rice and Kelsey Hudson and then took a 51-16 lead on a jumper by Danielle Smith.
Five Cougars reached double-figures as they shot 66.1% (39-for-59) from the floor. Taylor Lumas led William Jessup with 17 points.
The Cougars led 51-20 at halftime before expanding their lead to 58-20 by scoring the first 7 points of the second half. William Jessup’s Taryn White hit a jumper, but Hudson scored 5 straight to give the Cougars 63-22 lead.
Hudson finished with 20 points (9-of-12) and 7 rebounds and gave the Cougars their largest lead of the game (92-43) on a jumper with 4:53 remaining in the game.
Ashley Oakes scored a career-high 18 points in her second career game hitting 7-of-10 shots from the floor and a pair of treys. Lindsey West added 12 points connecting on all 4 of her attempts from the field and the free throw line. Monica Somers chipped in with 11 points.
Nine of the 10 Cougars that played scored, and the only Cougar that didn’t hit the scoring column, Sarah Leathers, had a game-high 12 assists in her first career start.
