Cougars Slam Hawks

EL CAJON, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific enjoyed one of its most efficient offensive performances and rode it to a 3-0 (30-15, 30-13, 36-34) GSAC win at Christian Heritage Tuesday night.

The win is the Cougars' second straight and fourth in the past 6 matches and improves them to 17-10 overall, 8-7 GSAC. It also completes a season sweep of Christian Heritage and is their tenth straight win over the Hawks, who drop to 1-19, 0-15.

The Cougars hit an impressive .386 (56-12-114) for the match, which is the second highest hitting percentage this season. They hit .587 (55-11-75) in a win over Oregon Tech at the Fresno Pacific Tournament in the first weekend of the season.

Chelsea Morgan led the Cougars with 15 kills and 4 blocks. She had just 2 errors in 24 attempts to hit at a .542 clip. Jenny Brickner had 13 kills and just 2 errors in 21 attempts (.524), and Colleen Walker finished with 11 kills and no errors in 18 attempts (.611).

The Hawks took an early 5-2 lead as the Cougars committed 2 of their attack errors in the opening 7 points. At that point, though, the Cougars reeled off 8 of the next 10 points to take a 10-7 lead, the final 2 coming on back-to-back kills by Walker and Morgan. The Cougars led 14-10 and used another 7-1 spurt, getting 3 of Maria Abaca's 5 kills, to open up a 21-11 advantage. They closed the game scoring 9 of the next 14 points.

The Cougars used 5 consecutive kills without an error to jump out to an 8-0 lead in game 2. The Hawks climbed within 9-4 before the Cougars scored 17 of the next 21 points, aided by 5 straight kills—2 each from Morgan and Katrina Anker—to take a 26-8 lead. The Cougars hit a dazzling .577 (17-2-26) in the game.

Game 3 was a different story as no lead for either team grew bigger than 4 points when the Cougars led 28-24. Christian Heritage opened up a 13-10 lead and held the Cougars off until they were able to tie the game at 16-16 on back-to-back attack errors. The game was then tied at 21-21 when Walker served an ace, and Adrienne Pepe registered a kill prior to another Hawk attack error that gave the Cougars a 24-21 lead.

They led 28-24, but the Hawks rallied to tie the game at 29-29. The Cougars then had 4 match points, including one at 34-33, but the Hawks fended off each of them. Leading 34-33, Morgan committed just her second attack error of the match. She more than made up for it though as she ended the match with consecutive kills on the next 2 plays.

Alison Pattison led all players with 17 digs. Walker finished with 10 digs. Setter Courtney Fox finished with 51 assists, her second highest 3-game total this season.
