Seyler Sinks Cougars

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- Despite a school-record 13 3-pointers, Azusa Pacific couldn't overcome The Master's Jessica Seyler, who poured in a game-high 24 points to lead the NAIA's No. 4-ranked The Master's College to an 83-77 Golden State Athletic Conference win over the Cougars Saturday night.

The loss snaps the Cougars' 4-game win streak and drops them to 8-4 overall, 1-2 GSAC. Meanwhile, The Master's improves to 11-3, 3-0.

Azusa Pacific, which was looking for its second win over a top 5 foe in less than a week, fell victim to its own demise as the Cougars shot just 35% from the floor and committed 25 turnovers.

Leading 18-16 at the 12:14 mark of the first half, the Mustangs scored 12 straight points to open up a 30-16 advantage with 7:12 to play. The Cougars, however, responded with a mini-13-5 run keyed by back-to-back 3-pointers from Nicolette Dresback and Alyssa Ferdaszewski to get back within 3 (40-37) at the break.

Marie Dyk finished with a team-high 20 points, hitting 6-of-12 three-pointers, and her bomb completed a 20-5 Cougar spurt that spanned over each half, including the first 7 points of the second half in which the Cougars took a 44-40 lead.

From there the action went back and forth until Liz deWaalmalefyt converted a conventional 3-point play to give the Mustangs the lead for good (60-58) with 10:17 to play. The Cougars trailed by 2 and had a chance to tie before Seyler buried her fifth trey of the night to ice the game by giving the Mustangs a 67-62 lead with 7:37 to play. The Cougars got no closer than 4 points the rest of the way.

Four Cougars finished in double-figures. Lindsey West finished with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Dresback, who hit a pair of treys, added 15, and Jaclyn Rice knocked down 3 treys to key her way to 11 points.

The Cougars finished just 27-of-68 from the field, burying nearly half of their field goals from beyond the arc, going 13-for-33 from downtown. The 13 treys breaks the old standard of 11 set during the 2000 campaign.
