AZUSA, Calif. -- All it took was a
Lindsey West basket and Azusa Pacific had control of the game.
West, a sophomore forward out of Wasco, Calif., poured in 32 points to lead Azusa Pacific to a 78-67 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Cal Baptist, Tuesday evening.
After a game-opening Amy Sim field goal gave Cal Baptist a 2-0 lead, West responded by igniting a 9-0 Cougar run that allowed Azusa Pacific to lead nearly wire-to-wire in the game.
The formula was simple for the Cougars, have West cut along the baseline behind the defense and then go to work, and what a job she fashioned. The All-GSAC West buried 12-of-14 shots and was a perfect 8-for-8 at the line to register the second 30-point game of her career (she had a career-high 37 vs. La Sierra earlier this year).
"We worked a lot in practice on getting the ball inside and hitting our cutters," said West. "We saw a weakness in their zone that would allow us to do that, and our guards did a great job with their passes."
Senior guard Nicolette Dresback had the keen eye for the evening, hitting West on numerous occasions which resulted in a career-high 8 assists for Dresback. Junior Kelsey Hudson served as an effective decoy to West, scoring 17 points. Marie Dyk chipped in with 10, 3 of which came off a key 3-point basket with just over 5 minutes to play that kept Cal Baptist at bay after the Lancers had whittled to the lead to just 7 at 64-57 following another Castle field goal.
Azusa Pacific built a 25-13 lead midway through the first half and used it to hold a 38-34 cushion at halftime. West scored 10 of her 18 first-half points during the Cougars' game-opening run. The Cougars were still up by 12 (31-19) when Cal Baptist went on 15-7 run, closing to within a trio of points at 37-34 following a Lindsay Castle trey with 1:22 remaining. However, that was as close as Cal Baptist would get the rest of the way.
"Lindsey did a great job of finishing plays tonight," said first-year Cougar coach Danelle Liles. "We got the heavy ball out yesterday in practice and worked on finishing off shots around the basket. It seemed to pay off for her."
Cal Baptist's balanced scoring attack could not off-set the West's one-player show. Five different Lancers scored in double figures, led by Castle's 14 points off the bench.
Azusa Pacific has now won 12 of the past 13 meetings with Cal Baptist and improves to 11-6 on the season, 4-4 in the GSAC. Cal Baptist falls to 7-8 overall, 2-5 in the GSAC.
