Azusa Pacific 76
Biola 73
LA MIRADA, Calif. -- For the second time in a week a game came down to the wire, and for the second time in a week Nicolette Dresback was clutch.
Last Tuesday, Dresback converted a pair of 3-point plays and took a charge in the final 2 minutes of the Cougars’ win over Fresno Pacific. Tonight, the senior from Seattle, Wash., banked a jumper in the key with 1:22 to play to break a 72-72 tie and lift Azusa Pacific to a 76-73 win over arch-rival Biola in Chase Gymnasium.
Dresback finished with a team-high 19 points, hitting 8-of-13 shots from the floor. She also converted a 3-point play with 2:52 remaining that gave the Cougars a brief 72-70 lead before Sarah Baird tied the game with a jumper for the final time at 72.
Marie Dyk chipped in with 13 points and 8 rebounds and iced the game with a pair of free throws with 33 seconds remaining.
As they did the last time they visited Chase Gymnasium when they opened up a 25-point first half lead, the Cougars stormed out of the gate to assume early control. The Cougars scored the first 13 points, starting with a 3-pointer by Lindsey West and ending with a West jumper. The Cougars led 32-21 at the 7:59 mark when Biola, led by Baird, who scored the first 4 points, went on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 2 (32-30) with 6:24 to play in the half.
Biola’s Rachel Dulin then sank a pair of free throws to tie the game, 36-36, and the Biola 36-17 run was complete as the Eagles caught the Cougars with 3:33 to play.
The Eagles led by 2 (46-44) at the break and opened up a 7-point (61-54) lead with 11:44 to play. Kelsey Hudson then capped a 13-5 Cougar spurt with a jumper that gave the Cougars a 67-66 lead with 5:02 to play. Elizabeth Matthews answered with a trey before West hit a pair of free throws to tie the game again (69-69) with 3:37 to play and setting up Dresback’s heroics.
West finished with 12 points and 8 rebounds for the Cougars, while Hudson finished with 11 as 4 Cougars finished in double figures. The Cougars shot just 38.7% from the field, including a 29% from the 3-point line.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 10-5 overall, 3-3 GSAC. Biola drops to 7-7, 1-4.
