Pair of Aces

IRVINE, Calif. -- Robbie Lindsey's RBI single with one out in the fourth broke a scoreless tie and lifted Azusa Pacific to a 2-0 win over Concordia, completing the Cougars' doubleheader sweep of the Eagles in Irvine.

The Cougars, who have won 3 straight and 11 of their past 16, also took the opener, 9-4, and clinched a spot in the upcoming NAIA Region II Playoffs.

Alex Valadez led off the fourth with a single to left and later advanced to third on a single to left by Matt Dzama. Lindsey then hit a come backer up the middle and into center that easily scored Valadez to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Dzama, who finished 2-for-3, gave the Cougars an insurance run with his eleventh home run of the season with one out in the sixth.

That was more than enough for Cougar starter Kelly Strickland (4-4), who went 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing just 3 hits, 4 walks and striking out 4. Strickland allowed just 2 runners to reach second, including one in the seventh with just 1 as the Eagles had the tying run on first, forcing Azusa Pacific head coach Paul Svagdis to delve into his bullpen for the first time the entire day.

Dzama relieved Strickland with 2 on and 1 out in the seventh and forced John Carreon, who had 2 of the Eagles' 3 hits, to ground into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play for his fifth save.

In the opener, Azusa Pacific rode the strong arm of Andy Alstot, who tossed his second complete-game of the season, scattering 10 hits and 4 runs (3 unearned) to move to 4-2 on the season.

The Cougars erased a 2-0 deficit with a pair in the sixth and then blew the game open with 5 runs in the seventh. Dzama was hit by a pitch to lead off the sixth, and he advanced to second on a single by Lindsey. Robert Guiles drove in Dzama, and Shaun Beutner's RBI groundout scored Lindsey.

The Eagles re-took the lead with an RBI single by Carreon in the sixth, but in the seventh, the Cougars sandwiched 4 singles (3 of them run-scoring) around an error by Eagle shortstop Kevin Rios to key their way to 5 runs, taking a 7-3 lead, which was enough for Alstot, who retired 9 of the Eagles' final 12 batters.

Guiles finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs, including RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings as well as an RBI double in the eighth. Lindsey finished 2-for-5, scoring 3 runs. Billy Gwinn, Jake Haaker, and Ryan Marcos each finished with 2 hits apiece.

With the sweep, Azusa Pacific improves to 26-20 overall, 17-10 GSAC. Concordia falls to 21-28, 11-16.
