Over Troubled Waters

AZUSA, Calif. –Less than 24 hours after surrendering 15 runs and 24 hits in a gut-wrenching 12-inning loss to The Master's, Azusa Pacific decided to turn the tables and benefit from an offensive explosion of its own.

The Cougars pounded out 22 hits and used 4 big innings in thumping NCAA Division III Bridgewater (Va.), 22-6, in a non-conference game Wednesday night in Azusa.

Bridgewater jumped out to a 3-0 lead after its first three at-bats which seemed to awaken Azusa Pacific as the Cougars batted around in 4 of their final 6 at-bats.

The Cougars did their most significant damage in the third inning when they took the lead for good, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring 6 runs on 5 hits. The Cougars wasted no time as the first 8 hitters reached base. They sandwiched a pair of walks around 6 consecutive hits, including Ryan Marcos' second home run of the season, a 3-run shot to right center.

After Bridgewater cut into the deficit with an unearned run in the fourth and a solo home run in the fifth, Dzama gave the Cougars more breathing room with his fourth home run of the season in the fifth, and that opened the floodgates and led to a 7-run inning to give the Cougars a 13-5 lead. In the fifth, Robbie Lindsey added a double as did Billy Gwinn, who had 2 hits in the inning.

Gwinn finished 4-for-6 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Marcos was 3-for-6 with a pair of runs scored and 6 RBIs. Dzama was 3-for-5 with a run and 3 RBIs.

Freshman Josh Breckley made his first collegiate appearance and picked up the win in relief. He tossed 4 innings, allowing just 1 earned run while scattering 4 hits and striking out 4. Derek Wholers made his first start and worked the first 4 innings, allowing just 5 hits and 3 earned runs.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 7-8, Bridgewater drops to 3-3.
