RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific dropped both games of a GSAC doubleheader at Cal Baptist, falling to the Lancers 8-6 in the opener and 4-2 in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Cougars fell into a 5-0 hole after 6 innings as the Lancers touched up Cougar starter Brad McKinney for 8 hits and 5 runs (4 earned). The Cougars were never able to solve Lancer starter Joey Lessa, who allowed just 1 earned run in 7 innings.
Robert Guiles, who made his first appearance in more than a month, scored on Jake Haaker's RBI-single in the seventh to break the Cougars into the scoring column. They added 2 more in the eighth on Billy Gwinn's RBI groundout and Matt Dzama's RBI double to make it 5-3.
The Lancers responded though in their half of the eight using 5 straight singles to plate 3 more runs and take an 8-3 lead. In the ninth, the Cougars used back-to-back walks and consecutive singles, including a 2-run hit from Ryan Marcos to cut the deficit to 8-6. They had the tying run at the plate but failed to score again.
Nick Mercado had 2 hits and 2 runs in 5 at-bats for the Cougars. Shaun Beutner had a single and 2 runs. McKinney suffered his first loss of the season.
In the nightcap, the first 4 Lancers that came up to the plate all scored as Cal Baptist got to Cougar starter Josh Breckley right away for 3 hits and 4 earned runs before even getting an out. Andy Alstot (5 innings, 5 hits) and Joe Bitonti (1 inning) relieved Breckley and shut the Lancers down the rest of the way, but it was too little to late as the Cougars couldn't get to Lancer starter Tony Orozco.
The Cougars cut the deficit in half with back-to-back singles by Alex Valadez and Mercado, who later scored on an RBI groundout by Marcos, but Orozco shut the Cougars down, scattering just 5 hits while going the distance for his fourth win.
Valadez finished with a pair of hits, and Marcos had the Cougars' lone RBI.
With the losses, Azusa Pacific drops to 14-15 overall, 9-9 GSAC. Cal Baptist improves to 15-17, 7-8.
