SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific opened up a 9-2 lead through the first 6 innings, then held on for an 11-7 GSAC win over The Master's College in Santa Clarita.
The Cougars, who out-hit the Mustangs 15-10, scored a pair of runs in the fourth to erase a 1-0 deficit, then added 4 more in the fifth and 3 more in the sixth. After the Mustangs scored a pair of runs in the sixth, the Cougars put the game away with 2 more in the seventh.
Sophomore Mike Medlock started and lasted 5.2 innings, allowing 4 earned runs and striking out 5 to move to 4-1 on the season. Junior Kelly Strickland tossed the final 3 innings, allowing just 3 hits, to pick up the save.
Robert Guiles, Nick Mercado and Robbie Lindsey each finished 3-for-5. Guiles hit his second home run and had a pair of RBIs. Mercado had a pair of runs and a pair of RBIs. Ryan Marcos was 2-for-3, and Matt Dzama hit his third home run of the year, a grand slam in the fifth.
With the win, Azusa Pacific moves to 6-6 overall, 4-2 GSAC. The Master's falls to 7-6-1, 4-2.
