SAN DIEGO, Calif. - NCAA Division II UC San Diego scored 12 runs over the first 4 innings then cruised in for a 19-6 non-conference win over Azusa Pacific.
The win is the Triton's fourth straight, which follows a 5-game skid. UCSD is now 6-5. Azusa Pacific suffers its second straight loss and falls to 4-5.
The Tritons roughed up 6 Cougar pitchers for 17 hits and 19 runs. Freshman Peter Dusan started and lasted just the first inning, allowing 3 hits and 4 earned runs. He suffered the loss in his first collegiate decision.
Junior Brad McKinney had the most successful outing of the 6 Cougar arms. McKinney allowed just 2 hits and a walk in 2.2 innings. He was the only pitcher to not allow a run.
UC San Diego scored 3 runs in the first and 3 in the second, then doubled its total with 4 in the third and 2 in the fourth. The Cougars trailed 12-2, and cut the deficit to 12-5 with 3 in the seventh. However, the Tritons put the game away with 7 runs in their final 2 at-bats.
Azusa Pacific had 13 hits. Freshman Robert Guiles finished with 3 of them, including a double and a run in 4 at-bats. Robbie Lindsey and Alex Valadez each had 2 hits apiece.
