COSTA MESA, Calif. -- The last time Azusa Pacific and Brescia (Ky.) stepped off the court together, the Bearcats just pulled off a shocking upset of the Cougars in the first round of the 2002 NAIA Women's Basketball National Tournament.
Two years later, the Cougars got their chance at redemption, and junior Kelsey Hudson made sure she did her part.
Hudson, who was just a freshman in the last meeting, buried a pair of free throws with 7 seconds left to lift Azusa Pacific to an 84-81 win over the fifth-ranked Bearcats in the first game of the 4th Annual GSAC Challenge at The Pit on the campus of Vanguard University in Costa Mesa.
The win is the Cougars' third straight and moves them to 7-3 overall. Brescia suffers just its second defeat of the season, falling to 12-2.
Hudson finished with 13 points, hitting 9-of-10 free throws. In all, 6 Cougars reached double-digits led by 14 apiece from Lindsey West and Marie Dyk.
"Our defensive rotations were good, but we gave up some outside shots because of our lack of communication," said an elated Azusa Pacific head coach Danelle Liles. "Other than that we played pretty well. Everybody that played contributed positively tonight."
Leading 45-44 at the intermission, Azusa Pacific separated itself from the Bearcats, opening up a 10-point lead early in the second half. However, Brescia fought back, and tied the game at 62-62 on back-to-back treys by Lauren Simmons with 10:53 to play. Neither team was able to pull away and take control until the final seconds.
The Cougars held a 1-point lead (82-81) when Hudson was fouled. She sealed the upset win by sinking both charity shots. The Bearcats attempted a last-second, desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer but to no avail.
Nicolette Dresback chipped in with 12 points and a team-high 7 rebounds. Katie Van Essen added 10 off the bench, going 5-for-5 from the floor, and Monica Somers finished with 10.
