It's Raining Rice

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Sophomore Jaclyn Rice had 15 points, all on 3-pointers, to lead Azusa Pacific to a 70-53 win over Notre Dame de Namur in the final game of the King Oscar Classic at Evergreen St. in Olympia, Wash.

Azusa Pacific improves to 2-0 on the season, the first time the Cougars have opened the season with 2 straight wins since 1999.

Once again, Azusa Pacific kicked up its defensive pressure forcing the Argonauts into 20 turnovers and only allowing them to shoot 34% from the floor.

"We try to take people out of their comfort zone with our defensive pressure, and we did that each of these games," said Azusa Pacific head coach Danelle Liles. "They had a hard time running their offense because of our pressure, and that's how we're going to win games."

Tournament MVP Monica Somers, who had 17 points in her collegiate debut last night, finished this game with 7 points, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 rebounds. But it was her defense on the Argonauts' point guard Melissa Bayol, who had 22 points last night, which made the difference. Somers limited Bayol to just 2 points and 0 assists tonight.

Rice buried 5-of-9 treys and had 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 0 turnovers. She hit 4 of her treys midway through the first half to blow open a close game as the Cougars carried a 39-22 lead into the locker room

Sophomore Lindsey West was named All-Tournament as she posted her first double-double of the season, getting 13 points and 10 rebounds. Alyssa Ferdaszewski had another solid game in her hometown, scoring 9 points and grabbing 6 rebounds in 22 minutes. Kelsey Hudson had all of her 8 points in the first half.
