POMONA, Calif. -- NCAA Division II national-power Cal Poly Pomona used a 14-2 run midway through the second half to turn a 43-43 tie into a 57-45 lead and eventual 73-66 win over Azusa Pacific Saturday night.
After 3 straight wins, the loss is the Cougars' first on the young season. It is also the Broncos' sixth straight win and eighth in 9 games with Azusa Pacific.
Britt Sumida hit her only shot of the game, a 3-pointer, with just 5:09 gone by in the second half to break a 43-43 tie. The Broncos, who led 6 other times in the game, never trailed again, keeping the Cougars at an 7-10 point cushion the rest of the way.
Nicolette Dresback had a team-high 13 points and 10 rebounds. She scored 4 points in an 11-3 Cougar run that trimmed a 40-32 deficit to the 43-43 tie.
The Cougars played a sparkling first half, committing just 11 turnovers and keeping the Broncos in check. Trailing 22-21 with 6:43 to play, the Cougars outscored Cal Poly 10-3 over the next 2:25 to take their largest lead, 31-25, with 3:18 to play. However, the Broncos, led by Candice Allen, who finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds, closed the half with an 11-2 spurt to carry a 36-33 lead into the locker room.
Kelsey Hudson added 12 point and 7 rebounds, and Monica Somers chipped in with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists in 25 minutes off the bench.
With the win, Cal Poly Pomona improves to 2-0, while Azusa Pacific drops to 3-1.
