Lanced in Riverside

Cal Baptist 73
Azusa Pacific 57

RIVERSIDE, Calif. –Cal Baptist closed the game with a 22-4 run to sprint away with a 73-57 GSAC win over Azusa Pacific, snapping a 10-game losing streak to the Cougars that dated back to 1998.

The Lancers last win against the Cougars was a 62-54 win in Riverside during the 1998 season.

The Cougars had no answer for CBU’s 6-foot-1 All-GSAC forward Angela Romagnoli, who scored a career-high 36 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season.

Azusa Pacific led 53-51 with 8:36 to play when Romagnoli hit 3 consecutive jumpers to give Cal Baptist a 55-53 lead and kickstart 8 straight Lancer points. Nicolette Dresback momentarily stopped the bleeding with a free throw, but the Lancers failed to cool off, scoring another 8 consecutive points to open up their largest lead of the game, 67-54, with 2:39 to play. Romagnoli scored 13 of her 36 in the final 8 minutes.

As was the case in Saturday’s 3-point loss at No. 21-ranked Vanguard, the Cougars were forced to play catch-up the entire night. The Lancers opened up a 10-point lead (27-17) with 6:48 to play in the first half before Dresback hit a pair treys to key a 10-3 Cougar spurt that cut the deficit to 3 (30-27) with 2:29 to play in the half.

The Lancers led by 6 (35-29) at the intermission when the Cougars opened with a 7-2 run, keyed by a Dresback 3-point play, to close the gap to 1 (37-36) at the 16:24 mark. The Cougars took their first lead (48-47) since early in the contest just 5 minutes later on a 3-pointer by Jaclyn Rice with 11:01 to play. The teams then traded baskets until the Cougars held a 53-51 lead when the Lancers went on their game-closing run.

Dresback had another fine outing, scoring a team-high 20 points, including a pair of treys. She also had 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Marie Dyk chipped in with 12 points. Rice added 8 points and 8 rebounds.

With the loss, Azusa Pacific falls to 6-14 overall, 4-5 GSAC. Cal Baptist improves to 11-9, 4-5.
