AZUSA, Calif. –It won’t go down as one of the prettiest games of the season, but nonetheless it’s a win, and Azusa Pacific will take those any way they come.

Trailing 48-46, Azusa Pacific finished the game with a 16-7 run to sneak away with a 62-55 win over rival Biola in front of a crowd of 1,200 in the Felix Event Center.

In a game with 11 leads and none bigger than 10, which came in the final 28 seconds, and 9 ties, the teams combined for 62 turnovers (31 apiece) and shot just 38.3% from the floor.

After Biola’s Sarah Baird hit a pair of free throws to break a 46-46 tie, Candis Regan hit a jumper to lock things up at 48, and that kickstarted an 8-0 Cougar spurt that gave them the lead for good, 54-48, with 4:17 to play. Four different Cougars scored in the run.

Former Cougar Allison Box, who ranks fourth in the NAIA in 3-point shooting, hit her third 3-pointer of the night to cut the lead back down to 3 (54-51) with 2:22 to play, but again the Cougars spread the wealth as 4 different players combined to hit 8-of-8 free throws down the stretch to put the game away.

Nicolette Dresback led all players with 18 points. She also had 7 rebounds, 6 steals and 3 assists. Jaclyn Rice had her second consecutive stellar game, finishing with 15 points and 8 rebounds. She connected on 5-of-8 treys. Marie Dyk had 10 points, 8-of-10 free throws, 6 rebounds and 5 steals.

The Cougars shot just 38% from the floor but were an impressive 77.3% from the charity stripe, hitting 17-of-22. Azusa Pacific, who gets out rebounded by an average of 5 rebounds per game on the season, also won the battle on the boards, 38-29

Azusa Pacific, who is 6-5 since starting the season 0-7, improves to 6-12 overall, 4-3 GSAC. Biola, which earlier in the day fell out of the NAIA’s Top 25, falls to 10-4, 3-4.
