Barbone Gets Win No. 500

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific combined for 29 runs and 33 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Vanguard Saturday afternoon in Azusa to retake sole possession of first place in the GSAC Saturday afternoon.

Also, with the 15-3 win in game 1, Azusa Pacific head coach Tony Barbone, the GSAC' all-time winningest coach collected career win No. 500 in just 15 seasons at the helm.

Senior Matt Canada (3-0) fired 7 strong innings, allowing just 6 hits and 2 runs, and then left the rest up to the explosive Cougar bats in the opening game.  Senior Victor Ambruso went 3-for-4 with 3 runs, 3 RBIs and a double.  Sophomore Robbie Lindsey was 3-for-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs.

With the bases loaded and no outs and the Cougars leading 6-0 in the sixth, a Vanguard error on a routine ground ball opened the flood gates and led to an 8-run outburst that blew the game wide open.

In the nightcap, senior Nick Padilla (3-2) won his third consecutive game, allowing just 4 hits and 3 runs and striking out 7 while throwing a complete game.

Vanguard jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Cougars answered back with 3 runs in their next at-bat and single runs over the next 3 innings to take a 6-2 lead.  For the second game in a row, the Cougars put up 8 runs in an inning, this time in the sixth, to take full control.  Senior Mike Soto highlighted the 8-run inning with a deep 3-run home run.

Juniors Seth Johnson and Rocky Binkowski each finished 3-for-3 and both scored 3 runs apiece.  Junior Steven Hubbell (pictured) broke out of an early-season slump going 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs.  He finished the day 5-for-7 with 6 RBIs.

With the sweep, the Cougars improve to 13-7, 8-2 GSAC, while Vanguard drops to 11-11, 7-3.
