Chico State Outlasts the Cougars

AZUSA, Calif. – Chico State, which is ranked No. 28 in NCAA Division II, scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning on its way to a 7-2 victory over Azusa Pacific Friday night in Azusa to remain undefeated in 2002.

The win is the Wildcat's fifth win in 6 games against the Cougars, who fall to 2-5 on the season.

The Wildcats had the bases loaded and 2 outs, and it appeared that Cougar starter Nick Padilla was about to get out of the early jam, when Rusty Kawachi sent a ground ball up the middle, which Cougar shortstop Robbie Lindsey mishandled, allowing 2 runs to score.

Chico State's Brian Thomas, a Southern California native, then kept the Cougar bats silent all evening as he went 5 solid innings, allowing just 3 hits and 1 run.

The Cougars cut into the deficit in the sixth inning when pinch hitter Nick Mercado, who led off the inning with his first hit of the season, scored on Eric Ordorica's sacrifice fly.  The Cougars other run came off senior Mike Soto's first home run of the season in the eighth inning.

Padilla went 5 innings, allowing just 4 hits and 1 earned run in suffering his second loss of the season.  Three relievers combined to pitch the final 4 innings, allowing 4 runs.  Six separate Cougars recorded just one hit apiece, led by Soto's blast.  Junior catcher Derek Wright came off the bench to hit his first double in the ninth inning.
