Cougars Write Familiar Story For Another Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- It's been the same story all season long, but nevertheless it is what has worked.

Azusa Pacific has relied on its All-GSAC triumvirate of Stephanie PattenCatherine Solorio and Jacqueline Godoy the entire year, and tonight was no different as the trio led the NAIA's No. 23-ranked Cougars to a 79-64 win at California Baptist.

The senior trio combined for 53 of the Cougars' 79 points, led by Solorio's 20 and Patten's 19.

The win is the Cougars' 20th, marking the fourth consecutive 20-win season for the Cougars.  It also keeps the Cougars atop the GSAC standings with Fresno Pacific, which defeated The Master's College tonight.

"To get these wins is big for us, because it keep pressure on Fresno Pacific," said Solorio, the Cougars' leading scorer who also ranks fifth on Azusa Pacific's all-time scoring chart.  "Any time you win on the road this late in the season it's big.  I only have a few games left in my career, and I don't want to leave with any regrets.  That's been my focus from the beginning of my career."

After Cal Baptist scored the first bucket of the game, Godoy scored 8 straight points to give the Cougars an 8-2 lead less than 4 minutes in.  The Cougars then held a 15-11 lead at the halfway point of the opening half when Solorio ignited an 11-0 Cougar outburst that pushed the lead up to 17 (28-11) with 6:25 to go.

The Cougars led by 10 (36-26) at the half, and Patten scored 10 of the Cougars first 12 points in the second half as the lead increased to as many as 21 (63-42) with 9:25 to play.  Cal Baptist got no closer than 12 the rest of the way.

Five Cougars scored in double figures.  Godoy added 14 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals. Senior Mandy Lindhe and junior Marcene Guerrero each chipped in with 10 points off the bench.  For the game, the Cougars shot 50% (28-for-56) from the floor and forced 28 turnovers.

The 64 points allowed, also marks the 11th time in the past 12 GSAC games that the Cougars, the GSAC's best defensive unit, held their opponents below 70 points.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 20-7, 14-4.  Cal Baptist falls to 12-16, 6-13.
