Cougars Drop La Verne

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific used a pair of clutch 2-out, 2-RBI singles, one in the fourth by junior Steven Hubbell, and one in the bottom of the eighth by senior Victor Ambruso to pick up an 8-5 win over neighboring La Verne Wednesday night in Azusa.

The win in the Cougars' second in a row, their first such streak this season.

Azusa Pacific (4-5) was clinging to a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the eight inning when Ambruso lined a base-hit up the middle scoring sophomore Robbie Lindsey, who earlier in the inning hit his second double of the game, and junior Rocky Binkowski, giving the Cougars a comfortable, 8-5, lead.

Senior Matt Canada then put the cap on 2 1/3 innings of relief with a 3-up, 3-down ninth to give the Cougars the win and pick up his first save of the season.

La Verne (2-1) jumped on the board with a pair of runs in its first at-bat.  However, the Cougars answered with single runs in the first and second to tie the game at 2-2.

Hubbell then pushed the cushion to 4-2 with his 2-out bases-loaded single in the fourth.  The Cougars added 2 more in the sixth when Collin Kyte doubled home Lindsey, who doubled to lead off the sixth.  Two batters later, Ambruso brought home Kyte with a single.

La Verne then answered with 3 unearned runs in the top of the seventh to cut the gap to 6-5.

Sophomore Brad McKinney (pictured) pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief to pick up his first win of the season.  He allowed 4 hits and 3 runs, but none of them were earned.

Ambruso, Lindsey, Shaun Beutner and Eric Ordorica each collected 2 hits apiece.  Ambruso added 3 RBIs, and Kyte and Hubbell added a pair.
